Best Bed for Back Pain NZ
What Bed Is Best for Back Pain in NZ?
For most people with back pain, a medium-firm mattress on a solid timber or slat base is the best starting point. Skip the ultra-soft pillow tops and spring-only bases if you're a back sleeper — they let your lumbar sink too much overnight. The Bliss Max Firm at $999 and the SleepTime X-Firm in a Henley bed frame combo at $719 are popular picks for back pain sufferers. If you're a side sleeper with back pain, go medium rather than firm — you still need pressure relief at the hip.

Back Pain and Mattress Questions
Is a firm or soft mattress better for back pain?
For most back pain, medium-firm is the sweet spot. Very firm can cause pressure points; very soft lets the spine sag. Medium-firm supports the natural lumbar curve.
Does the bed base matter for back pain?
Yes. A solid base or well-spaced slat base (slats no more than 8cm apart) gives the mattress consistent support. A worn-out divan or sprung base can negate an otherwise good mattress.
Can a new mattress fix back pain?
It can significantly improve it, but it's not a guaranteed cure. If you wake up with pain that eases through the day, your mattress is a likely contributor. Pain that's there all day is more likely muscular or structural.
How long should I give a new mattress before judging it?
At least 4–6 weeks. Your body takes time to adjust to a new sleep surface, especially after years on a worn-out mattress.
What's a good NZ-made mattress for back pain under $1,500?
The NZ Made Bliss Max Firm at $999 is one of our most popular for back pain. It's pocket spring, firm support, and made locally in NZ.
Should I get a king, queen, or single for back pain?
If you share the bed, queen or king. Larger beds mean less partner disturbance which means better quality sleep and less stiffness.
Do I need to buy the bed frame and mattress together?
Not necessarily. We sell mattresses separately and also as package deals with bed frames. Packages often give better value — check our current combos in store or online.
