Mattress for Side Sleepers NZ
What Mattress Should Side Sleepers Buy in NZ?
Side sleepers need a medium to medium-soft mattress — one that gives way at your hip and shoulder while still keeping your spine in line. Pocket spring or memory foam both work; pocket spring breathes better in Auckland's humid winters, so we usually recommend that. Skip anything labelled 'extra firm' or 'orthopaedic' if you're a side sleeper — those are for back sleepers. Budget-wise, you can get a solid NZ-made pocket spring mattress from around $829.

Questions About Mattresses for Side Sleepers
What firmness is best for side sleepers?
Medium to medium-soft (also called 'Plush' or 'Pillowtop'). You want your hip and shoulder to sink in slightly so your spine stays horizontal.
Is memory foam or pocket spring better for side sleepers in NZ?
Both work, but pocket spring is better for NZ conditions — it breathes more in humid weather and doesn't trap heat the way dense memory foam can.
Can a firm mattress cause hip pain for side sleepers?
Yes. If the mattress is too firm your hip bears the full pressure rather than distributing it. This causes that classic morning hip soreness many side sleepers complain about.
Do I need to buy a new bed base as well?
Not always. A good pocket spring mattress works on most existing bases, including slat bases. Just make sure the slats are no more than 8cm apart.
What size mattress do most NZ couples buy?
Queen is the most popular for couples. King gives more room but costs more and needs a wider bedroom (usually 3.8m minimum).
How often should I replace my mattress?
Every 8–10 years is the general rule. Signs you need a new one sooner: you wake up stiff, you can feel your partner move across the mattress, or you can see sagging.
