How to Choose a Sofa That Lasts — NZ Buyer's Guide
A sofa is the most-used piece of furniture in your home. It needs to survive movie marathons, kids' jumping sessions, and the occasional wine spill — all while looking good. Here's how to pick one that lasts.
Step 1: Measure Your Space
Before falling in love with a sofa, measure your room, doorways, and stairwells. Can you get it through the front door? Will it overwhelm the room? Allow at least 60cm walkway around the sofa. Don't forget to check our furniture dimension guides.
Step 2: Frame Material Matters
A quality sofa starts with a solid frame. Look for:
- Kiln-dried hardwood frames (oak, birch) — resistant to warping and cracking
- Corner-blocked joinery (not just stapled)
- Metal springs and webbing underneath the cushions
Step 3: Fabric vs Leather
| Fabric | Leather |
|---|---|
| Cozy, more colour options Stain-resistant treatments available More affordable |
Easy to wipe clean Ages beautifully with patina Better for allergies and pets |
Step 4: Cushion Fill
Foam cushions hold their shape longer. Feather-filled cushions feel luxurious but need daily plumping. A foam core with feather wrap gives the best of both worlds.
Step 5: Test It in Person
Photos can't tell you how a sofa feels. Visit our Henderson showroom at 406 Great North Road, open 7 days. Sit, lounge, and test every sofa before you buy.
