How to Choose the Perfect Sofa for Your Living Room

Choosing a sofa is one of the biggest decisions you will make for your home. It is the centrepiece of your living room — the place where you relax, entertain, and spend quality time with family. Here is our practical guide to help you get it right.

1. Measure Your Space First

Before you fall in love with a sofa, measure your room. As a general rule, leave at least 45cm of walkway around your sofa. Also measure your doorways and hallways — you need to be sure your new sofa can actually get into your home!

Common sofa sizes to know:

  • 2-seater: approximately 150–180cm wide
  • 3-seater: approximately 190–230cm wide
  • Corner/L-shaped: 250–320cm across the longest side

2. Think About How You Use It

Do you have kids or pets? Look for durable, easy-clean fabrics like performance fabric or leather. Love to lounge and watch TV? A deeper seat with a chaise might be perfect. Entertaining often? A large corner sofa gives everyone a seat.

3. Choose the Right Fabric

At Furniture World, our NZ Made sofas are available in a wide range of Warwick Fabrics — from linen blends to velvet to performance fabric. Our in-store team can help you choose a fabric that suits your lifestyle and colour palette.

4. NZ Made vs Imported

Our NZ Made sofas come with a lifetime frame warranty and are built to last. Imported sofas can offer great value at lower price points. Our team can walk you through both options to find the best fit for your budget and needs.
